Lemonade: An Exercise in Thankfulness
May 4, 2010
Casey’s car was stolen Sunday night. We always knew it could happen, and that it probably would– 1996 Camries are really hot right now. Who could resist the glamor of peeling silver paint or a bent antenna? I know my dream car is a GramCam pushing 200,000 miles. It’s totally worth committing a felony for.
But seriously.
Did you like my pluralization of Camry?
I hope so.
Instead of dwelling on thoughts of frustration, helplessness, or discouragement.. I thought I’d make a list of reasons I’m thankful in this situation:
- Nobody was hurt.
- There were relatively few items of value in the car, and all are easily replaced.
- I love, love, love being at home with my kids.
- We were prepared for the car to die at any moment, and knew we’d transition to being a one-car family if that happened any time soon.
- Missionary training.
- Sharing a car will give Casey and I the opportunity to communicate more, and be more aware of each other’s daily activities, as we work out car logistics.
- Casey has a job that allows me to work at home, and he can still drive to work.
- This gives us extra motivation to start saving for a van.
- Maybe now I’ll finish a few knitting projects that have been on the needles for WAY TOO LONG.
- I’ve got a great double stroller, and the library, seminary, and redbox (hah) are all within walking distance.
- We live right next door to lucy & ricky, and they’re always eager to help.
- God has used the past three years to teach us that HE will provide. He has met every need, we have never gone without. Anything. I’m confident that this will only further confirm that he is faithful, loving, and works all things together for our good– which is to be like Christ.
Okay. That’s twelve things. Now I’ve got something to come back and read when I need to be reminded…

well done, friend! We are a one-car family (well, ok, in typical KY fashion, we have one non-working vehicle in our garage), and I find it really works just fine. :)
wow, seeing the old ‘Gram-Cam’ makes me kind of sad.
So sorry Alicia I know how frustrating that might be. But your dreams of being a van mom are becoming more of a reality ;) I am glad you can see the good in an otherwise difficult and frustrating experience. We hope it gets returned or found, but if not like you said God is good and meets our needs. Keep us updated if anything is discovered!!
I am so sorry about your car, but I really LOVE your list. Thanks for the reminder that I really enjoyed reading. I do hope the car finds its way home soon.
Oh man! You were driving around an IRRESISTIBLE ride like that!? Come on – you TOTALLY had to see it coming. The only car I’d be MORE willing to commit a felony for would be if it had at least one fender of bondo.
Seriously though, sorry to hear it. :( Your willingness to CHOOSE to see positive in a *ahem* uncomfortable/new situation is inspiring. Hang in there. As you so accurately pointed out, He does always provide.
Your perspective is inspiring. I’m still praying for conviction & repentance from the theif!! And yes, we really are eager to help… you just have to let us. ;) Love!
